Speed skating has for a very long time been one of the most popular sports in Norway. We don't exxagerate when we call it a "national-sport".

There are about 120 clubs with in total 900 skaters with a license all over the country. At the moment there are 11 artificial  400-meter rinks available – in Oslo, Hamar (indoor), Bergen, Stavanger, Tromsø, Skien, Larvik, Geithus, Savalen, Tønsberg, Trondheim and Båstad  (Østfold). In addition new rinks are planned in Arendal and Sandefjord. A couple of 200 and 250-meter rinks are also planned to be built in the western part of Norway, where speed skating has become very popular after the opening of the artifical rink in Bergen.
